For Centuries The Historic Tale of England’s Tragic Queen Has Haunted Great Britain

Throughout English history, the Tower of London was home to some of England’s most notorious royal prisoners… and their ghosts.

Though many tales of tragic, forlorn spirits have circulated for hundreds of years, none of these amazing apparitions have been sighted more frequently or told more often than those about the ghost of the murdered queen…

1. King Henry VIII

Henry VIII was King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. The ill-tempered king was known for warring with the monarchs of Spain and France and for his reformation of the English church, which greatly expanded his own power within the country. This reformation can be attributed solely to his infatuation with his second wife, Anne Boleyn.

3. The New Queen

Henry broke away from the Catholic church and defied them, annulling the marriage to Catherine and marrying Anne. Unlike many women of her time, Anne could read and write, loved poetry, fashion, and dance, and was a student French and Latin. She became the new queen of England and bore Henry one daughter, Elizabeth.

In 1536, after failing to produce Henry a male heir, Anne was accused of adultery, incest, and witchcraft. Her enemies at court told Henry that she had betrayed him with a number of her close, personal friends. These men included: musician, Mark Smeaton, William Brereton, the king’s groom, Sir Richard Page, Sir Henry Norris, Sir Thomas Wyatt, and even her own brother, George Boleyn…

The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It has been used throughout its long and bloody history as an armory, treasury, menagerie, and in the time of King Henry VII, a jail. Although the evidence against Anne and her alleged suitors was unconvincing, all of the accused were found guilty and condemned to death. Anne was taken to the Tower of London to await her execution and her sentence was commuted from burning (for her alleged witchcraft) to beheading.

7. Wailing and weeping
Tales of Anne’s ghost reference her as being seen just as she was when she was alive- a beautiful woman in a beautiful gown. Though, some sightings are a bit more upsetting. Many eyewitnesses have claimed to see her headless body walking, her severed head, tucked beneath her arm and weeping uncontrollably. This image has become so iconic, that it has been parodied in movies and television. But what you would think if such a vision approached you in some dark corridor one night?

8. Ghostly Procession

One of the most spectacular ghost stories relating to Anne is that of a Captain of the guard. One night, while on duty, he saw a light flickering in the locked Chapel. He climbed a ladder and looked into the window of the chapel. A procession of Knights and Ladies dressed in renaissance costumes pacing the chapel. Their leader was an elegant female who resembled the depictions of Anne Boleyn he’d seen in portraits. The procession later disappears. Over the years, many men and women of prominence have caught sight of Anne Boleyn and most of their encounters have been in the Tower…
